Tuley’s Takes Today: Monday Betting Recaps, Updated MLB Stats, Tuesday 8/9 Best Bets – VSiN Exclusive News – News
Monday was an interesting day as I didn’t spend much time at the Tuley’s Takes home office.
Had to get up early (6:15am PT) to take my son Maddux to the bus stop for the first day of 8th grade – then had to drive him to school because the bus was an hour late (typical of the first week in the Clark County School District). After taking a nap, I mostly did a few chores and errands before having to pick up Maddux after school, take him to McDonald’s, and then to Las Vegas Youth Orchestra practice. I then went to the D to sign up for a slot tournament for the next two days and then took Maddux home. Downtown I went to Circa and watched the Orioles cash in our secondary game of the day on 1st 5+120 as they trailed the Blue Jays 5-1 after the first 5 innings en route to a win 7-4. When I got home I could see the Angels winning as our best bet of the day with 1st 5+110 as they led the A’s 1-0 after 5 innings and that was the final score as well. So the second sweep of our top 5 bets in the last 3 days (with a 0-2 day in between). Let’s recap the rest of Monday’s betting results (full game) and look for more first 5 inning opportunities on Tuesday’s MLB card, and we have an NFL preseason game opener that we aired on the show.” The Lookahead” Sunday night and yesterday. column.
MLB: The favorites went 4-3 as the Yankees (chalked short -110) beat the Mariners 9-4 late Monday to snap their 5-game losing streak. The upsets came from the Giants (+160 in a 1-0 win at the Padres), the Angels (+119 in a 1-0 win at the A’s) and the Orioles (+116 in a 7-4 win over the Blue Jays). Home teams went 4-3; Less than 4-3.
More MLB: Favorites lead 967-644 SU (60%) on the season with 25 pick-’ems (favorites typically win around 59%; still ahead of the pace; gap had narrowed but is now back to 60% ). Home teams only lead 861-775 (52.6%, but usually closer to 54%). Under bets now lead 802-751-80 (51.6%).
Rangers 1st 5+125 at Astros: I have two decently priced dogs I like on Tuesday, led by the Rangers with starting pitcher Martin Perez (9-2, 2.47 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) against the Astros. Rangers aren’t great, but Perez is giving them a chance as they’re also 15-6 on aggregate in his starts. And then the last time he faced those Astros was May 20 when he threw a full game of 7 hits. We don’t need him to go the distance again, just shut down the Astros for the first 5 innings. As for our second pick, we won with the Angels on Monday, but we think the value is on the A’s on Tuesday with James Kaprielian facing Shohei Ohtani. We’ve had Ohtani disappear lately (he’s 0-3 in his last 3 starts) and we’ve been on Kaprielian, who we saw in person in Oakland last month and wrote that he was underestimated. He is 2-0 in his last 3 starts (the A’s are 3-0 in those starts) with a 1.10 ERA and 0.98 WHIP). The A’s are an overlay at or around the 1st 5 + 150.
Thursday: Patriots + 1.5 vs. Giants: This game kicks off Week 1 of the NFL preseason. We’ll be adding more choices during the week as we hear more coaches talk about their QB rotations and beginner playtime (note: follow my example of shortening baseball games with the first 5 bets, I bet maybe more on the first halves of this pre-season). We will see. Either way, Belichick is 49-36 ATS (57.6%) in preseason games, so he knows how to prepare for it while the Giants’ Brian Daboll holds his first head coach position. Moreover, Daboll has already banned the recording of his training sessions, so we don’t expect him to show much in the pre-season matches.
Good luck today (and every day!).
