This Travel Hack Genius will help you travel the world for free
Getting free housing sounds almost too good to be true… But it isn’t, if you’re an animal lover who’s willing to keep pets, of course.
Traveling, while wonderful, has always been expensive. Thanks to COVID, however, prices have never been higher, especially for airfares – with economy flights currently being offered at “business class prices”.
But an Australian woman has come up with a nifty trick that is making travel much more affordable. Madolline Gourley, 32, from Brisbane, has managed to save around $28,000 in travel costs by keeping her cat when she travels.
For the past four years, Madolline has received free accommodation in around 50 homes across Australia and the United States in exchange for spending thirty minutes a day feeding and cuddling the owner’s pet cats.
Using various apps – like TrustedHousesitters, MindMyHouse, HouseCarers, Aussie House Sitters and House Sitters America – Madolline connects with various people in need of a cat sitter and then offers to take care of their pets in exchange for a room rather than money.
Madolline revealed to CNBC do it that on her last trip, she stayed for free in a one-bedroom apartment in Chelsea, New York. By comparison, a one-bedroom apartment in Chelsea costs around $400 a night on Airbnb.
If you’re considering trying Madolline’s secondary hustle, you’ll need to make sure your profile stands out as Madolline says the pet sitting and home industries have recently become much more competitive.
“Over the past few years, many digital nomads have used babysitting sites, as sessions can last up to six months or a year. I know someone who was looking to have their house serviced in Miami and received 40 applications. A few years ago, she might have been lucky enough to have 10.”
Madolline also advises that if you are a cat or dog or any other type of pet owner you should definitely put that experience on your profile as you are more likely to be chosen to house/sit pets. this way. She also said to try to keep animals locally first to rack up positive reviews before applying for seats overseas.
So if you’re happy to forgo the hotel experience on your trip and you’re an animal lover, maybe you should consider keeping your pet the next time you go; free accommodation means more money to spend…
Pair this cool hack with a few other money-saving (or earning) programs and you could find yourself roaming the world for free – or at least without getting into more debt. Now all you have to understand is how to get from place to place for free and you’re good to go forever…
