The new off-road motorhome acts as a micro-grid and can charge your electric vehicle
Finally, electric camping has arrived. For those who want to get in touch with nature but are worried about charging availability, Campworks has the solution for you. The redesigned Campworks NS-1 is unlike anything you’ve seen before. The solar powered motorhome (caravan) can store energy and use it to power your electric vehicle, or any other electrical device for that matter, while the interior is adaptable to every situation.
Your next camping trip just got a major upgrade. After launching the first NS-1 last year (with help from Dell), Campworks is introducing its new, improved model to make it easier for EV drivers to explore the outdoors.
Campworks builds 100% battery-powered motorhomes (caravans) designed to be functional (what’s more useful than a portable microgrid?) and tough to tackle any terrain. In fact, the company uses the slogan “live where you are”, which is precisely what the NS-1 offers.
In 2017, Campworks started by Thomas Hoffman as part of an environmental design project while studying at the University of Colorado. Two years later, the first demonstration motorhome was created in Longmont, Colorado.
During the pandemic, Campworks ramped up its efforts, and in 2021 the first NS-1 prototypes hit the streets (and off-road). The team released 13 different prototypes, learning from them how to handle superior energy storage and deliver it accordingly.
From these prototypes, Campworks has created the upgraded version of the NS-1 EV motorhome that acts as a mobile power grid.
What makes the Campworks redesigned NS-1 EV motorhome so special?
The Campworks NS-1 is much more than just a motorhome. The NS-1 is designed for those who want to own their own power, which makes it especially valuable for EV drivers. Here are some key features:
- Off-grid mobile power 5000 W at 240 volts.
- 5,500Wh LiFePO4 battery with capacity up to 11,000Wh.
- 1840 Wh of solar energy.
- 19″ ground clearance with 31″ off-road tires.
- Plated steel under the body.
- 2″ thermal insulation on all sides.
- Full kitchen with 9 foot slide out counter, two burner cooktop, cookware storage and LED lighting for late night snacks.
You can plug the NS-1 into any outlet with a global charging input to charge it. Perhaps, most importantly, the motorhome can also charge your electric vehicle with the J1772 EV charging input and Stage 1 and Stage 2 compatibilities.
According to Campworks, no OEM RV or trailer has ever been built with a 9000W 240V electrical output. Kristian Rene, Campworks Community Manager, says:
Energy is a currency. This is real power, and if you have it, your ability to work, explore, build, and then rest, is that change we wish to see in the world. It is an energy bank that allows the individual or organization to provide and share energy.
You’re not just off the grid in an NS-1; you own your own energy and network, you own your mobility.
Campworks NS-1 EV campers go for $65,000 with a fully refundable deposit of $1,000. The company expects production to begin in November with deliveries as early as Christmas.
Once the order is placed, you will be invited to a kick-off meeting with your Campworks Adventure attorney via email.
A solar-powered motorhome that stores huge amounts of energy and can use it to power your electric vehicle? Sign me up. It will be the perfect addition for EV drivers looking to get off the grid, literally.
Not only that, but the interior is fully adaptable to any situation. It even includes a functional kitchen! The NS-1 is perfect for family road trips, weekend warriors, long commuters, digital nomads, or anyone who just wants to get the most out of their electric vehicles.
Pitch a tent on top to get more space or take it across the country. The NS-1 EV Motorhome is suitable for any adventure. I, for one, can’t wait to get this electric motorhome out into the wild.
