I returned to the office for the first time in almost 2 years, with a new dog
This is part of the CNBC Make It’s My First Day Back series, where people share their stories of what it’s like to return to the office after working from home during the Covid-19 pandemic. Are you planning to return to the office soon? Share your stories with us here.
Last name: Dave stangle
Office: Bark’s New York Office
Work from home since: March 10, 2020
Income: December 2, 2021
Return conditions: Evidence of the Covid-19 vaccine
Dave Stangle remembers the last time he was in the office – the week of March 10, 2020 – as a “weird dream”. On his last day at the office, Stangle remembers seeing his coworkers put away their monitors to work from home, as he “ran around the office and prepared for a trip to the Caribbean.”
The 37-year-old has worked for around seven years as a director of partnerships for Bark, a company that designs dog toys, meals, subscription boxes and other pet accessories.
“I was like, ‘What do they know that I don’t know? “” he told CNBC Make It. âThere was a lot of uncertainty [about the coronavirus], but I figured I’d see everyone when I got back from my trip, or at least see them all at the office in a few weeks. “
Now – having spent the pandemic working from Tennessee, New Jersey, Vermont and Florida – Stangle is back in New York. During his first day back at the office, Stangle was surprised at how much he had changed since he last sat at his desk and curious to see how his pandemic puppy, Fred, s ‘would suit office life.
CNBC Make It: Missed the office?
Dave Stangle: Sometimes I missed the office, especially the free cold brew on tap. I really didn’t expect my coffee budget to skyrocket like it did during the pandemic! Most importantly, I have always enjoyed seeing and meeting new people.
How did you feel when you got home?
I decided to go back to the office for the first time on December 2nd to meet up with some of my coworkers and attend the holiday party at the office. I had the same concerns most people have about getting back to work – if that was for sure, how the virus would spread in an office – but Bark took the right precautions, I’m vaccinated, and recently received my reminder, so I felt comfortable.
How did the first day go?
Since we recently moved into a house in Austerlitz, New York, I have stayed at a friend’s apartment in the city. I got into the office at 8:30 am, but didn’t open my laptop until around 11:00 am because I was so excited to see my coworkers again and catch up. I really missed being able to hug people or walk to their desk to chat.
It was also the first time I had brought my dog ââFred, who I had a few months after the start of the pandemic, to the office. My other bulldog, Frank, would come all the time before COVID. I have a feeling that the first hour of each day that I take them should be set aside to let Fred sniff every inch of the desk. Frank, on the other hand, will get on someone’s chair, and I’ll tell them to stay, and I can walk away for 20 minutes or two hours.
I worked until around 5 p.m. when I drove from the office to the Christmas party, where I spent most of the evening meeting up with my friends and took an Uber home. at midnight.
What was the strangest experience?
Since I have been in the business for over seven years, I have accumulated quite a few products and merchandise. During the pandemic, however, BARK profited from cleaning up and reorganizing the entire office – a lot had changed.
When I returned, all my things were packed in a box on the floor. It was funny because many shipments were from 2020 and most of the products / samples I had, before the pandemic, were out of date, for old projects that we weren’t even pursuing anymore.
What surprised you the most?
How many new jobs naturally arise when you are in the office with your coworkers. For example, while I was working at my office, my coworker started telling me about the possibility of a new retail partnership – an idea that never occurred to us until we had this informal conversation in the office. Then later in the afternoon we had an hour-long meeting on this, and now it’s a priority for me.
Also, I didn’t take a lunch break, but munched on M & Ms, candy, and jerky all day. At the end of the day, there was a huge stack of packaging on my desk.
How often do you plan to be in the office?
At this point, I’ve learned that a hybrid setup works best for me. Working from home can be fun, especially when we are moving to our new neighborhood, but I also love being able to sit in a room with someone to discuss ideas and have easy access to our product samples, which which helps me to better plan partnerships and projects. . There are certainly advantages to both.
