How Jurassic World Dominion VFX was able to keep going through the pandemic
The Industrial Light & Magic VFX supervisor explains how the VFX team to Jurassic World Dominion continued to work on the film during the COVID-19 pandemic. ILM was founded by George Lucas in 1975 and since then has provided special effects to iconic films such as Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, and jurassic park. Over the years, ILM has nominated and won several accolades, including 16 Oscars out of its 40 nominations.
ILM is partly known for being a revolutionary force in the visual effects industry. There are several “firsts” the company has accomplished in visual effects, such as using digital technology for the first time to create a complete and detailed living creature in jurassic parkdeveloping the iMocap system in 2006 for Davy Jones and his team at Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chestand using real-time rendering for the first time, in conjunction with Unreal Game Engine and digital LED screens, as a virtual set for The Mandalorian in 2019. Shooting for Jurassic World Dominion began on February 19, 2020 in Canada, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an exclusive interview with screen rant, ILM VFX Supervisor David Vickery discusses how the special effects team adapted to working on the film during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vickery notes that although filming halted after an initial 3-4 weeks due to COVID-19, the VFX team switched to a work-from-home model within 48 hours and continued to work on Jurassic World Dominion. Their work included setting “temporary versions of dinosaursin order to help the editing team, as well as to incorporate scenes from Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard which were filmed on green screens and later made to appear as if the actors were actually in Malta. full Vickery can be read below:
The pandemic had a number of effects on us, really, in that we had been filming for three or four weeks and then we got locked down and nobody could film and we stopped. But the visual effects continued, we pivoted in about 48 hours, ILM rotated the entire team to be able to work from home safely, and we kept going. We were working on the post-vis, which was taking the plates that we had already shot and putting temporary versions of dinosaurs in there so that editorially it could tell the story and Colin could engage in a montage that he could then return to us to work on the visual effects. But it also had another effect in that we have massive footage that was staged outside of the UK, the footage in Malta, for example, where we suddenly decided not to send our main unit in Malta. So Bryce and Chris have never been to Malta, so we had to pivot and figure out how, from a visual effects perspective, we could fit them into the second unit photography taken in Malta and make the audience believe that they actually went to this location. We had to film several chalkboard plates, following vehicles traveling the streets with three or four cameras capturing background plates for us. We digitally scanned huge swaths of streets in the city of Valletta, so we could reconstruct them in post-production and insert green screen Chris and Bryce plates into these shots to create the seamless effect that they are. actually went to Malta and filmed this.
Switching immediately to working from home in any field is a big challenge, especially for the film industry, where deadlines are important to meet due to the huge financial investment.. The fact that the VFX team working on Jurassic World Dominion being able to make this transition to working from home within 48 hours to keep the ILM crew safe while doing their best to stay on schedule and complete the film is a feat in itself. Not only has the VFX team’s transition to working from home helped them stay safe, but their work has also freed up other team members like Dallas Howard and Pratt from having to go. to Malta to film there in person. This would have implied a higher likelihood of contracting COVID-19, especially early in the pandemic when there was no vaccine available.
The VFX field has the ability to create worlds, like that of Jurassic World Dominion, which exceed the viewer’s imagination with incredible detail and nuance. This field continues to change and evolve, with more advanced technologies and exciting new techniques being introduced year after year, but the same awe viewers experienced watching an extremely lifelike T.
